Talk: From Forres to the Arctic Circle

When

11/03/2026
7:00 pm

We are delighted to be working in collaboration with the Forres Business Association, where one of its directors. Gavin Ellis, a well known Forres businessman will share his experience of being called to assist an attempt to row the Northwest Passage which had got into in difficulty.

This will be a lesson in Survival, Support, Diplomacy, Culture and Traditions.

Here’s what Gavin says: “Aged 60 years old, not in the peak of health, I answered a call for help from my cousin Leven Brown ( holder of several Guinness world records) who was attempting to row the Northwest Passage across the top of Canada and had run into difficulty. I said yes! Seven days to Paulatuk inside the Arctic circle. What followed was an adventure and a series of life lessons which included listening, politics and diplomacy; influenced by not only cultural differences and local traditions but also by a house fire. Three weeks of keeping my nerve and reassuring those around me. Then a race across the world. It necessitated me drawing on all my skills and experiences from a child being brought up on the Isle of Mull, to my 35 years as an Innkeeper at Knockomie.”

Refreshments will be served before and after the event.
