Led by Dr Andrew Dilly, this fascinating talk will explore the life of Forres-born Donald Smith, later Lord Strathcona.
Smith grew up in Forres before departing for Canada. He made his fortune there working for the Hudson’s Bay Company, going on to become a leading banker, politician, railway entrepreneur and finally Canadian High Commissioner in London.
The audience will hear about his life, his marriage to a part native American woman and how he was heavily involved in some of the most dramatic episodes in the history of Canada.
The talk will explore how his life was shaped by the expansion of empire and the global economy in the nineteenth century, and how those global connections in turn had an impact back home in Scotland’
