You made it to your first location – well done.
Welcome to the Witches’ Stone, a stark reminder of our town’s sordid past.
The stone marks the place where a woman, believed to be a witch, met her grisly end after being thrown from the top of Cluny Hill.
Unfortunately, the practise of treating suspected witches in this way was not saved for just one woman – many met their maker by being thrown, or rolled in barrels down the hill.
On the stone there is plaque which gives an insight to this barbaric treatment:
“From Cluny Hill witches were rolled in stout barrels through which spikes were driven. Where the barrels stopped they were burned with their mangled contents. This stone marks the site of one such burning.”
